 My name is Richmond West, and I am a writer and philosophy teacher. My works cover religious, ethical, sexual, and philosophical themes. My political leanings, which I think are important for me to state, since I deal with ethical writing (and I don't want to shock anyone when they pick up my books), lean toward Libertarian (on sexual issues), Democrat (on economic issues), and Green (on environmental issues). Republican I am not. :) Definitely, I'm on the far left of the spectrum, and a reader needs to understand that before picking up my books. However, I think even conservatives will appreciate my honesty and integrity on some issues...at least, I hope so. I am Christian (though many who call themselves that would disown me in a heartbeat because of my views), having grown up United Methodist.

However, I am also a pluralist and teacher of many world religions: I believe Love and Compassion can take place in any religion, when well-formulated and reflected upon critically. Hence, I am interested in Eastern religions, Native American religions, Wicca, and more.

To date, I have written three novels, The Deviants, Your Yesterday Is My Tomorrow, and Witch Hunt.

I am striving to be a master of many fictional genres. My first two novels, both of which have won local awards, are fantasy/science fiction, while the third and most recent, Witch Hunt, is more of a common-life drama. I will be entering it into contests, and will update the site if and when it wins any awards. I have a bizarre, eclectic, postmodern style which may not be popular today, but which I think will stand the test of time. I am currently in the Ph.D. program in Philosophy and Literature at Purdue University, and I am very happy there (but ask me again in about three years...LOL).

Furthermore, I am very interested in the paranormal, and hope to be writing paranormal fiction soon as well. Planned upcoming novels (subject to change, and I have to finish my Ph.D. dissertation first) include Frozen Ghost (paranormal) and Mental Ward (the sequel to Witch Hunt, but dealing more explicitly with the mental health industry). I have many other stories living in my head, and hope one day to get to World Wanderer (science fiction/fantasy), The Legend of Zackarius (fantasy), Kokomo Rose (drama), When No One Believes in You But You (drama), Deviants Too (the first of three planned sequels to The Deviants, destined to be among the worst-selling and most hated books in history...LOL), and more paranormal books (sequels to Frozen Ghost...I'm really excited about the potential of that planned series).

What I Write

My third and most recent book, Witch Hunt, is, in my opinion, my best novel to date. It is 440 pages long, with ethical, sexual, philosophical, and religious themes. Just $19.95! My second book, Your Yesterday is My Tomorrow, won second place in the local Pell City Pens contest the year it came out. And Diana tells Rusty he is really Sodol-kai, a buddha-to-be who has encountered her in many lifetimes. 

Rusty's family and his doctors believe he suffers from schizophrenia. While in a mental hospital, Rusty writes about his past lives. Is he really suffering from schizophrenia, or is a goddess calling him from the stars? Only the reader can decide. But when the good karma runs out, will Sodol-kai lose his greatest love?

My first book, The Deviants, was intended to have a Christian theme concerning "the least of these," but with lots of sex and violence in order to help the book sell. Unfortunately, this has tended to backfire, and it saddens me that this book has offended many people. However, it did win third place in a local Pell City Pens contest when it came out. And even Shakespeare had his Titus Andronicus, so I have decided to let the novel stand as is. If you can handle the sex and violence, give it a try, and I think a wonderful message may just come through.
